York Opera’s production, of their usual exceptionally high standard, proves that this opera’s comparative neglect since then has been quite unfair
— Charles Hunt, York Evening Press

Cursed by a witch, the bad Baronets of Ruddigore are all forced to commit at least one crime a day or else they perish in inconveivable agonies.

Robin Oakapple loves Rose Maybud, a maid given to medieval language and to following her book of etiquette. Living in the village is Robin Oakapple. He is really Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, the current baronet.

Because Ruthven is assumed to be dead, his younder brother, Despard, has assumed the title and with it the full weight of the curse.

Robin also has a foster-brother, Richard. Home from the sea, the latter falls in love with Rose Maybud and reveals Ruthven’s secret in order to win her hand.

Pressed by his own sense of honour to accept his rightful title, Ruthven tries vainly to assume the bad baronet’s role but he displeases his ancestors who come from their picture frames to punish his failure.

Eventually, however, he finds a cunning way out of his dilemma…
