What can I do?

You don’t just have to be a singer to join our group - we’re always on the lookout for talented individuals in every aspect of theatre-making who can put their stamp on the diverse productions we put on every year.

We don’t audition for a place in the company, but for those of you who want a chance to shine, we hold auditions for principal roles as we begin rehearsing each show. This is normally January and June, but keep an eye on our website for the latest details.

We’re not just looking for stars of the stage - no production can go ahead without some behind the scenes magic, and ours are no exception. Good at sewing? Handy with a piece of 2x4? Perhaps you’re unsure and you just want a challenge - come and see us at our next rehearsal and we’ll help to find something you can get involved with!

No, membership is not reliant on an audition. Singers wishing to take principal roles are auditioned to help us choose our main cast, but potential chorus members are invited to come along and see what it's like.
While it is helpful to have some idea of how to follow music, it's not essential. Rehearsals will teach the separate parts, and online audio files will be available to support practice at home.
There's no expectation that our members will have a particular kind of voice, just that they will enjoy performing some of the most beautiful, dramatic and powerful music ever written.
Of course! York Opera prides itself in doing everything 'in-house', including creating costumes, building sets, collecting and making props, publicising our work - the list is a long one! Let us know how you would like to help.
