Come and join us for York Opera's next production, The Beggar’s Opera
An uproarious satirical masterpiece to be performed at The Citadel, York 23rd - 25th October.
First presented in 1728, John Gay’s ballad opera used well-known tunes of the time to satirise both Italian opera and the political classes. It has been described as an ‘anti-opera’; instead of the grand music and themes of opera, the work uses familiar tunes and characters that were ordinary people. Some of the songs were by opera composers like Handel, but only the most popular of these were used. The audience could hum along with the music and identify with the characters. Last performed by York Opera in 2008, this production uses the arrangement by Frederic Austin which ran for a record 1,463 appearances in in the 1920s.

While it is helpful to have some idea of how to follow music, it's not essential. Rehearsals will teach the separate parts, and online audio files will be available to support practice at home.
