The Tales of Hoffmann

Follow the dreams and desires of Hoffmann, a poet, as he relates his tales of the women he once loved.

Join us on his journey to share in the poet’s stories of deceit, trickery and despair. Is he foolish, perhaps unlucky. Or are there more sinister forces
at work.

Offenbach’s sumptuous opera is based upon the imaginative stories and tales of the German romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffman.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to enjoy Offenbach’s entertaining and fantastical final opera. Brought to the stage by York Opera.

  • York Opera presents The Tales of Hoffmann, but Jacques Offenbach. Sung in English.

    Total Runtime: TBC

  • The Tales of Hoffmann is a dazzling opera by Jacques Offenbach that takes you on a journey through love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. It’s a bit like binge-watching a gripping anthology series, with each episode exploring a different chapter of Hoffmann’s messy love life.

In Act I, Hoffmann falls for Olympia, the ultimate "too good to be true" love interest—a lifelike robot. When the truth comes out, it’s as crushing as a bad catfish date.

Act II features Antonia, a talented singer whose passion for music comes at a deadly cost, thanks to toxic influences pushing her too far.

Act III is a tale of seduction and betrayal, as Giulietta, a glamorous courtesan, lures Hoffmann into a dangerous game that leaves him shattered.

Through it all, Hoffmann learns that art and creativity can rise from life’s heartbreaks. With its timeless emotions and unforgettable music, this opera resonates even today.
