A Christmas Double Bill - Vaughan Williams and Schütz
Two wonderfully evocative portrayals of the Christmas story, presented in the historic setting of The Citadel, York. Shortly before his death in 1958, Vaughan Williams wrote some of his most beautiful music to accompany a nativity play adapted from medieval pageants, drawing on traditional carols such as 'God rest you merry', 'The truth sent from above', 'Angelus ad virginem and of course 'The First Nowell'. Three hundred years earlier, German composer Heinrich Schütz wrote his setting of the Christmas story for the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, using some remarkable musical flourishes to bring the events to life.
